Re: Sewing Machine Help
Hi I also have the deluxe denim machine and it included a paper showing what you can do with the second needle and feet but it did not include instructions on how to do them. So if anyone has any ideas where I can find info on using the more advanced functions of this machine I'd love to know. Thankyou C Betts
Re: singer 401A
I have my grandmother's 401A Singer. I do know how to set the maching to do a basic zig-zag stitch. I know you put it on B-K. Over to the right on the machine, there is a lever with the numbers 1-5 on it. Move it over just a little between the 3 and 4 (may need to adjust depending on how wide you want the stitches). Also, you can change the number of stitches per inch - the more stitches (larger #) per inch, the stitches are closer together - if you use the highest # of stitches on the dial, it will make a solid zig-zag line. I hope I am remembering this correctly - I am at work right now. I will do some zig-zag stitching over the weekend and if I see that I told you wrong, I will let you know. GOOD LUCK!
Re: singer 401A
The darker knob should be pushed inward and turned to the letter "B", and the ligther knob is pulled outward and turned to the letter "L". The little red lever controls the stitch width. There is a chart on the inside of the little "hatch" on the top of the machine that shows the setting for the various, built-in stitches. You should consider getting a manual for that machine.

Re: Hand Embroidered T-Shirt HELP!
Hi, its been a couple of weeks since you posted, so Im not sure if you have figured it out already, but here goes: Turn your shirt inside out and lay it flat, with the front facing you. Measure the distance across your shirt, divide in half to find the middle. Using chalk on a dark shirt or pencil on a light colored shirt..use a ruler to mark a center line all the way up the front. If it doesn't look straight , as sometimes T-shirts are made horribly..just eyeball it. Now..Get a piece of lightweight iron-on interfacing. Cut a strip 1-1/2 inches wide x the length of your shirt front. take the strip of interfacing you cut and mark all the way down the center with another pencil line. at the ironing board carefully line up the strip of interfacing over your shirt front line. Iron by pressing (DO NOT RUB THE IRON BACK AND FORTH) lift and press to secure interfacing. When the interfacing is attached ..cut down your marked interfacing line. With the 2 pieces apart now, the center will be nice and stable and easy to work with. fold under the interfaced ares(to the inside) 3/4" on each side and press. Take it to your machine and Top stitch 5/8" from the edge by GENTLY stretching as your sew. If you don't stretch as you sew, it will look puckered. PRESS with the iron...and you are ready to embellish. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can use a strip of WonderUnder or fabric tac instead of sewing the opening down. I hope this helps..Bonnie
Re: If You Sew For A Living
I am in the same boat as you. I quit my job a few months ago because of burnout and depression. I was going to continue going to school for my Bachelor's degree but got denied financial aid because of last years taxes. So now that I am home I have found that I love sewing and really haven't been sewing but 6 months off and on since my mom gave me her sewing machine. I love to make little girls clothes, since I have a daughter. The problem with her is she is a tomboy so anything that she wears gets torn apart or dirty, so instead of making them for her I thought about selling them. One of my first projects was making a slip cover for a chair I was given. It turned out pretty good considering I didn't have a pattern or anything to follow. I really want to start selling my items online but I am not sure what the demand is.
Re: singer 401A
I am unable to send a picture as I do not have camera etc. I can tell you that there is a dial on front with 2 "knobs". (One on top of the other) There are letters on both sides of knob. When you dial the right side to a letter you use knob on bottom--then use knob on top to dial the left side. I know that this is clear as mud but I do appreciate your effort. Thanks again!!!
